Security for Olympics Impacts International Shipping
June 28, 2008
A Beijing government official announced effective July 1, 2008, trucking within the Bijing area will be restricted due to the heightened security of the Olympics. All trucks registered outside the Beijing city limits will not be able to enter into Beijing Area from July 1st until Sept 22nd. As a result, trucks registered within the city limits are increasing their rates.
Since demand for local truck service for Beijing Cargo is high, the trucking price is very unstable. With limited trucks, not only will the trucking fees increase, but also pick up and delivery charges within Beijing area are rising. At this point, it's expected that all trucking expenses for Beijing will increase at least five times the normal price. This will affect the air rates from Qindao and Dalian. Due to the uncertainty with regards to the trucking connection and the cost of trucking cargo to Beijing, air rates from these origins may fluctuate.

Weather in China Causing Massive Delays
February 4, 2008
Please be advised that as of midnight Friday, February 1 and until further notice Shanghai Pudong Int'l airport has been brought to near standstill by heavy snowfall in the area. Widespread delays and cancellations for both inbound and outbound flights are expected. Normal operations may resume later but this will depend upon weather conditions improving.
The inclement conditions in Shanghai and throughout China are expected to continue and further delays may result for export shipping.
For two weeks, much of China, which was long known for its capacity for mass mobilization, has been tied in knots by a series of major snowstorms. Although large, in most places the snowfall, described as having been the worst in 50 years, has been nothing like the deep cover that other parts of the world often experience in winter.
The freak storms are especially disruptive because they hit temperate parts of China that have little experience with snow. Houses in the south are poorly insulated and many communities lack snowplows and other equipment to cope with the heavy snowfall. State television has shown scenes of trucks creeping along through snowbound towns while wind-blown pedestrians slip on icy pavement.
In one of the hardest-hit areas, large parts of Chenzhou, a city of 1.2 million people in Hunan province, has been without power or water for nearly two weeks, the official Xinhua News Agency said. It said the nearby cities of Hengyang and Yongzhou also suffered blackouts.
"At present, this snowy and icy weather still shows no signs of abating," the civil aviation regulator added in a statement on its website. China warned residents of Shanghai and neighboring Jiangsu and Zhejiang provinces, the country's commercial engine room, to stay indoors if possible. In Shanghai, some food shelves in shops emptied as people stocked up.
Analysts said the brutal weather was a short-term blow to the economy and would stoke inflation that already has the government worried. It hit an 11-year high of 4.8% last year.
